Mailbag #1: Gmail for ASU

This one is for all the incoming ASU freshmen (especially the ones from University High School, since they all would be asking me anyway) or anyone who still has yet to get their Gmail for ASU account set up and working right. I've been asked this question so many times I could do it in my sleep, and yet ASU still comes no closer than almost explaining it, but not in such a way that it's actually easy to find. So here you go (it's actually easier than I thought it was, for everyone who I've told how to do this before now):

  1. Go to ASU's Electronic Post Office Update service.
  2. Make sure that "Directory Address" contains the email address you want to appear to be using (that people send email to, and that they see email from you as being from). You could use anything like "jsmith1@asu.edu," "john.smith1@asu.edu" (the "1" at the end of those is presumably there because someone else is already using "john.smith" or "jsmith," and the ASURITE ID of the person typing this is "jsmith1," so your milage may vary), or "forthehorde42@asu.edu," but keeping in mind this is an official account you'll probably want some combination of your name and initials or your full name (I use #2 in the previous examples).
  3. Under "Destination Address," enter "yourASURITEid@email.asu.edu" (for example, "jsmith1@email.asu.edu").
  4. Click "Update."

See? That wasn't too bad. One more thing though (I don't remember if it does this automatically), but make sure that whatever you entered before "@asu.edu" in your directory address appears now under "Aliases" in the box to the right. If it doesn't, click "Add" next to "Aliases" and type in "jsmith1," "john.smith1", "forthehorde42" or whatever you put before "@asu.edu" in your directory address, and click OK. It might take a while to kick in so don't be expecting it to go through instantly, but you should be all set up with your Gmail for ASU account.

Like I said, I'm still kinda pissed that ASU's TechBase wiki doesn't make this more plain, and that it still doesn't do it automatically. But that should get you going. Leave a comment wherever you read this if you have any problems with it, but give it a full day after you try before bugging me; like I said it can take a while to kick in.
